Britney Spears + Jesus Christ = SPEARS
SPEARS, which was created by 23-year-old Patrick Blute while he was an undergraduate, debuted in April 2012 at Columbia University’s Glicker-Milstein Theatre, with tickets to the first production selling out in less than one minute. The musical, otherwise known as “the gospel according to Britney,” includes songs such as “Stronger,” “One More Time” and “Crazy.”
An announcement points out that SPEARS is technically an opera because “not one word is spoken, and not one lyric is changed.”
Blute, who directed the first preview of the musical, writes, “SPEARS is a very special type of theatrical experience. It is a piece that reconciles a lot of the anxiety 20-somethings feel about living in a society that has thousands of statements and not much substance. It appeals to those from a religious background because it tells an essential story using fragments of pop culture in a non-offensive way.”
Blute and the SPEARS creative team are holding a funder’s preview Nov. 7 at the Foxwoods Theater Studio A in their quest to bring the musical to the Great White Way.
