ODs Spur Concert Cancellations

Cancellations are mounting in the wake of a rash of recent drug overdoses at concerts that authorities are attributing to MDMA, more commonly known as Ecstasy.

Over Labor Day weekend alone, two concertgoers died following suspected overdoses at the Electric Zoo festival in New York City, a woman in Washington, D.C., died after falling ill at a nightclub and three fans overdosed at a Sound Tribe Sector 9 show at Bank of America Pavilion in Boston.

Days earlier, another drug-linked death followed a Zedd concert in the city.

Six Flags New England announced Sept. 5 it was postponing an upcoming “Electric Adventure” concert and Verizon Wireless Arena in New Hampshire pulled the plug on an electronic dance music show dubbed the Barstool Blackout Tour, the Boston Globe reported.

An arena statement noted it was cancelling the show “in light of recent events.”

“This cancellation should in no way reflect safety concerns we specifically have with the Barstool Blackout Tour, whose record of producing safe shows speaks for itself.”

The Ocean Club in Quincy, Mass., has also canceled an upcoming concert in light of a number of drug overdoses and arrests in connection to the drug often known as “molly” at the venue, the Globe noted.
