Tatar Revisits Aerodrome

It seems Austrian promoter Ewald Tatar is determined to launch a successful festival called Aerodrome.

He first tried in 2004 at Austria’s Neustadt airfield, about 50 miles from Vienna, and did about 35,000 per day.

However, he then fell out with principal backer Bank Austria, who went ahead without him in 2005. It turned out to be a mistake as the second event crashed, pulling less than 30,000 over two days.

Although Tatar’s original plan was to create a festival to stand alongside “Roskilde, Sziget, Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park,” on Aug. 14 his second attempt at an Aerodrome began on a smaller scale.

A lineup that included System Of A Down, Flogging Molly, Nofx and Killswitch Engage drew a crowd of 17,000 to Prague’s Incheba Expo, an exhibition and event complex close to the centre of the Czech capital.

Tatar said he didn’t feel it was a bad result for a festival making its debut.

This year the Czech Republic’s most successful fests were arguably Rock For People and Colours Of Ostrava and the market could probably accommodate another mid-sized gathering.
