Paul McCartney Helping Candlestick Park Say Goodbye?

The idea was brought up a few weeks ago in a conversation between McCartney and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

The mayor had stopped by Golden Gate Park Aug. 9 to check out how Outside Lands was going when promoter Gregg Perloff invited Lee to meet with the former Beatle before he took the stage, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Lee mentioned that with Candlestick’s demolition in the near future, the city was planning on putting together photos and film footage to pay tribute to the Beatle’s final full concert Aug. 29, 1966.

“Oh, kind of like Shea Stadium,” McCartney said. “That sounds fantastic.”

Lee told the Chronicle, “Then, he looks at me and [general manager of the Recreation and Park Department] Phil Ginsburg and says, ‘Well, if you are going to tear down the stadium next year, we should think about us doing the last concert there.’”

The Beatle added, “You know my agent. Why don’t we follow up with him?”

The Chronicle noted that “Lee’s and everyone else’s jaw dropped” at McCartney’s suggestion.

“It was him who made the suggestion,” Lee said. “Believe me, it wasn’t something I, or anyone else, was expecting.”

With the San Francisco 49ers scheduled to relocate to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., for the 2014 NFL season, San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department plans to demolish The ‘Stick after the team’s final game of the 2013 season.

According to the Chronicle, “plans are to blow up the 69,000-seat stadium with a 30-second implosion, possibly within weeks of the 49ers’ final touchdown next season.”

Until then we’ll be waiting for McCartney to officially announce another final concert at Candlestick Park.
