The Smiths Are Still Not Reuniting

What difference does it make how many different ways The Smiths reunion rumor is repackaged? As charming as the idea may sound to fans, it seems inevitable that a rumor will be followed by a statement saying the band is still not getting back together. And that’s exactly what happened once more today.

The latest rumor is brought to you by Music-News.com, which claims that frontman Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr “are set to make a return after finding common ground.” According to the site, a reunion tour was planned for this fall. The bandmates were reportedly convinced to finally return to the stage after The Stone Roses’ reunion.

Marr posted the following response on his Facebook page: “The rumour of the Smiths reunion is untrue. It’s not happening.” He added, “Thanks to those with Hearts and Smarts. I don’t know where this stuff starts. Not from me. I got things to do.”

His former bandmate, drummer Mike Joyce, talked about the rumor with the Daily Mirror.

“When I first heard about it I was… to say surprised and rather shocked was a bit of an understatement,” Joyce told the British tabloid. “Obviously I had to keep my emotions in check because there’s a lot of people in the office. It’s not happening folks, as far as I know – which could be a good thing.”

As of the time of this post, Morrissey hadn’t released his own statement but I’m sure he has something snarky to say about the matter.

The Smiths broke up in 1987, shortly before the release of the band’s fourth and final studio album, Strangeways, Here We Come.

Over the years reunion rumors have included sets at Coachella and an offer of $75 million in exchange for a world tour.
