Big Gigantic is saxophonist producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken, two men who not only bring a massive sound to the party but also incorporate plenty of improvisational moments as well.

Lalli and Salken spoke to Pollstar in early October about their knack for combining improv with electronic music.

“We have loops set up in those sections so we can be more flexible and improvise,” Lalli told Pollstar.  “And even be a little more flexible with the track in terms of dropping off the bass and then we improvise, do a big buildup to bring in the bass section.  I can play half of my sax with one hand.  I can be like, ‘Okay, I’m going to do this thing with my left hand and then cure something else with my right.’”

Supporting their upcoming album, Nocturnal, scheduled to drop Jan. 11, Big Gigantic are plenty busy even before their nationwide tour begins.  During the last week of 2011, Lalli and Salken will play Lake Tahoe’s SnowGlobe Music Festival Dec. 29; the Lights All Night festival in Dallas Dec. 30 and Chicago’s Riviera Theatre New Year’s Eve.

Big Gigantic’s first set of 2012 shows are four gigs in the group’s home state of Colorado – Aspen at the Belly Up Jan. 18; Fort Collins’ Aggie Theatre Jan. 19; Boulder at the Boulder Theatre Jan. 20; and Denver’s Ogden Theatre Jan. 21.

Following a stint on the Mayan Holidaze cruise of Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, Big Gigantic launch their nationwide tour in Birmingham, Ala, at the Workplay Theatre Feb. 8.  Other stops include Atlanta’s Buckhead Theatre Feb. 10; Burlington, Vt., at Higher Ground Feb. 15; New York City’s Webster Hall Feb. 19; Madison, Wis., at Barrymore Theatre March 1; and Omaha’s Slowdown March 4.  Adventure Club supports Feb. 8-19.
