Festival Noize: BET Experience, Festival Supreme, Today’s Mixtape

Comedy rock duo Tenacious D will mix comedy and rock when the third annual Festival Supreme takes over Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall & Grounds Oct. 10.

Considering that Tenacious D is made up of Jack Black and Kyle Glass, it should come as no surprise that Festival Supreme’s lineup is a little more comedy oriented than your usual mega-event.  Sure, you get bands like Die Antwoord, The Darkness and Rocket From The Crypt, but you’re going to yuk it up when Amy Poehler, The Kids In The Hall featuring Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney & Scott Thompson, and the original cast of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” tickle your funny bone. 

Plus, Andrew W.K. is listed with the notation, “Very Special Solo Show,” another reminder that one should never expect the routine when Tenacious D is calling the shots.  Especially when the band list itself on the lineup as “jazz.”

Ice Cube is expected to be joined by former N.W.A. members when he takes the stage at the BET Experience at L.A. Live at Los Angeles Staples Center June 27 for a performance of tracks from the rap group’s debut album Straight Outta Compton.

While the official announcement states Ice Cube will be joined by “special guests,” Rolling Stone reports that N.W.A. vets MC Ren and DJ Yella will take the stage.  No word on whether Dr. Dre will make an appearance.  Founder Eazy-E died in 1993.

It’s just gonna be a great night,” Ice Cube told Rolling Stone.  “We’re gonna be there with Snoop, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q. It’s just gonna be one of those ‘I wish I were there in L.A. nights.’  And we’re gonna rock that shit, no problem.”

Released in August 1998, Straight Outta Compton helped define gangsta rap.  Tracks included “Gangsta Gangsta,” “F**k The Police” and “Express Yourself” as well as the LP’s title cut. The upcoming performance will mark the first time the songs have been performed by original members in 15 years.

Running June 25-28, the BET Experience at L.A. Live presented by Coca Cola also includes Kevin Hart, Nicki Minaj, Ne-Yo, Rae Sremmurd, Miguel, The Roots, Erykah Badu and others.  Tickets are still on sale.  Click here for more info.

Every Time I Die, The Movielife, Kill Your Idols and Real Friends are just some of the acts scheduled to appear at the fourth annual Today’s Mixtape Festival Aug. 15-16 at The Emporium in Patchogue, N.Y.  Now the festival has nailed down its daily plans, including Andrew W.K.’s Saturday night after party-gig.
