The Civil Wars Officially Break Up
Williams and White met at a 2008 songwriting session amongst a group of musicians trying to write a hit for a record producer, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. After drawing straws and being paired up, the two solo artists eventually formed The Civil Wars.
The Americana/indie folk act released its debut LP, Barton Hollow, in 2011. The album won Grammys for best folk album and best country duo/group performance for the title track, in addition to taking home the Vanguard Award at the ASCAP Awards.
In November 2012 the group canceled the end of its European tour and released a statement saying, “Due to internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition we are unable to continue as a touring entity at this time.”
Although the band released a self-titled album in 2013, the fall 2012 outing ended up being its final tour. The Civil Wars earned a 2013 “best song written for visual media” Grammy for its “Hunger Games” collaboration with Taylor Swift – “Safe Sound.” Plus, a tune from the band’s sophomore album, “From This Valley,” received a 2014 Grammy for best country duo/group performance.
Today’s breakup announcement comes with a parting gift for fans – a download of the duo’s take on “You Are My Sunshine.” The track was originally released in 2011 as a b-side to the band’s limited edition Barton Hollow 7” vinyl.
Williams says, “I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together. I sincerely hope that ‘You Are My Sunshine’ will be accepted as a token of my gratitude for every single person that has supported our duo throughout the years. I’m so thankful and my heart is full. Looking ahead, I’m excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I’ve loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon.”
Paul adds, “I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars—from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one.”
