‘Disco Demolition 2’ Planned For Minor League Ballpark

Called “Disco Demolition 2: You Better Belieb It,” the event is planned for July 19 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, home of the Charleston RiverDogs.  The promotion will feature the mass destruction of records  by Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus following the team’s game against the Augusta GreenJackets.  Why?  RiverDogs GM Dave Echols explains it all for you:

“Like so many, we have taken special exception to Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus’ music along with his numerous run-ins with the law and her controversial performances.  ‘Disco Demolition 2’ is dedicated to the eradication of their dread musical disease, like the original Disco Demolition attempted to do.  We are going to take Bieber and Cyrus’ merchandise and memorabilia,  put it in a giant box, and blow it to smithereens.  It is all in good fun, and we guarantee there won’t be a forfeit of a game.”

The “forfeit” Echols mentioned was what eventually happened in Chicago on July 12, 1979 when the White Sox hosted a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers.  Promoted by WLUP-FM, the demolition that took place between games lived up to its name by blowing up a crate of disco records.

But it didn’t end there as spectators left their seats and quickly turned the outfield into one gigantic mob scene.  The evening ended with the White Sox forfeiting the second game to the Tigers while the Disco Demolition went down in sports history as one of the worst promotions … ever.

Now a minor league sports stadium is planning to recreate that thrilling evening of yesteryear. Guess they haven’t seen the many videos posted on YouTube showing what happened 35 years ago.
