“Our top priority when organizing large-scale events has always been on the safety and security of our guests,” he said in a statement to The Star Online. “However, there is only so much an organizer can do, and we have always said that there needs to be greater cooperation with the authorities to produce a fun and safe environment for festivalgoers.”
The statement was in response to the deputy home minister, who said in parliament that dogs should be used to detect drugs at music festivals, citing the last Future Music Festival in March where six people died of drug overdoses.
Iqbal says live music provides a significant economic boost to Malaysia’s economy and has been effective in drawing a large number of tourists.
“FMFA alone, in its three years, has attracted over 40,000 tourists, who have travelled here specifically for the festival and contributed over RM150 million ($46.7 million) to tourism revenues.”
He also claims that FMFA is Southeast Asia’s largest music festival and made Malaysia a destination for regional music lovers.
