Hit Producer Erdman Dies

Australian record producer Martin Erdman died May 5 after a short illness.

Setting up a studio at the back of his father’s record store in Sydney, he made demos for local acts. In 1968 he set up Du Monde Records, signing young acts whose members went on to form successful bands including Sherbet and Sebastian Hardie.

In 1973 Erdman became in-house producer for Festival Records.

Among the hits he produced were Peter Allen’s “I Still Call Australia Home” and Sister Janet Mead’s rocked-up version of The Lord’s Prayer which reached No. 1 in the U.S. and sold 1 million copies.
