Paul McCartney Books Candlestick’s Final Show

The Paul McCartney show that’s been rumored for months now has an official spot on his itinerary. Nearly 48 years after The Beatles played its final concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, Macca will do the honors of performing the venue’s last show before its demolition.

“Farewell to Candlestick: The Final Concert” is scheduled Aug. 14. An announcement on McCartney’s website notes, “This once in a lifetime occasion is sure to be doubly bittersweet as Paul closes the same iconic venue where The Beatles played their final concert date on Aug. 29, 1966.”

The extra special show is part of his “Out There” tour, which boasts a setlist featuring tunes from throughout McCartney’s tour, from his time with The Beatles to Wings to his solo material, including songs from his most recent album, New.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported in August that San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee discussed the idea for the concert with McCartney before Macca took the stage at Outside Lands festival.

“It was him who made the suggestion,” Lee told the Chronicle. “Believe me, it wasn’t something I, or anyone else, was expecting.”

As for the future of Candlestick Park, the San Francisco 49ers are relocating from the venue to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., for the 2014 NFL season.

After the ‘Stick hosts its last event and crews have stripped the stadium of anything of value, Lennar Urban will take over the property, replacing it “with a mix of retail, housing and entertainment venues,” according to the Chronicle. The paper says that demolition is planned for 2015.
