Chris Brown Plots ‘INDIGOAT’ Run

R&B star Chris Brown is poised once again to do big business, as the singer has lined up a full run of arena headline dates with Tory Lanez, Ty Dolla $ign, Joyner Lucas and Yella Beezy. 

The INDIGOAT tour kicks off Aug. 20 at Moda Center in Portland, Ore., and continues for nearly two months, wrapping Oct. 19 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. A presale for Citi cardholders begins June 12 at noon local time and the general onsale begins June 14 at noon local time.

The tour will be promoting tunes off Brown’s latest album, Indigo, due out June 28. A new single with Drake, “No Guidance,” is now available for streaming and download. 

At this point, it would be safe to say that Brown has earned himself a “bad boy” reputation. Earlier this year he was held in police custody in Paris over a rape complaint, though he strongly denied the charge and soon was released with clearance to leave France. Prior to that he was arrested for felony battery in Florida in July of last year. In May of last year police investigated another rapper for an alleged sexual assault that occurred at his house. Police reportedly found weapons and drugs in the singer’s home after an unidentified woman claimed he threatened her with a gun in 2016. He was sued by former manager Mike G for an alleged drug-fueled assault in 2016. And, most famously, he was convicted in 2009 for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He also pleaded guilty to a separate misdemeanor assault of another individual, which occurred while he was still on probation, in 2014.

Brown’s rebellious rep does not seem to have hurt his business though, as his Heartbreak On A Full Moon tour got him to No. 83 on Pollstar’s 2018 Year End Top 200 North American Tours chart, with $14.8 million reportedly grossed on in the continent. Key to Brown’s success, no doubt, was his affordable pricing strategy. His average ticket price on the year was $43.90, meaning he was able to get plenty of butts in seats, with an average of 14,027 tickets per event. 

There are currently no international dates listed for Brown, though one would expect an artist of his tenure to be making some stops abroad. Travel problems have been a recurring theme throughout Brown’s career. He was denied entry into Japan in 2016. A promoter of his 2015 Australia/New Zealand tour was sued over its cancellation after Brown was denied a visa. He was stuck for several days in the Philippines because of fraud charges levied against him after a canceled New Year’s Eve show. He also had to cancel two Canadian shows in 2015 after a visa denial.

Prior to his Australia visa denial, Brown wrote on Twitter: “I would be more than grateful to come to Australia to raise awareness on domestic violence, I am not the pink elephant in the room anymore.” He added, “My life mistakes should be a wake up call for everyone. Showing the world that mistakes don’t define you.”
