Festivals: Utah’s Bonanza Campout; Adam Duritz Underwater Sunshine Returns, Austin Terror Fest Screams, Sacramento’s Sol Blume Shines

Bonanza Campout returns to River’s Edge Campground in Heber, Utah, near Salt Lake City  June 21-23 headlined by DJ Snake, G-Eazy, Empire of the Sun and featuring artists including Griz, Machine Gun Kelly, SOB X RBE, Bishop Briggs, Smokepurpp and many others.

In its fourth year and produced by SLC-based Live Nite Events, Bonanza Campout features a secluded and beautiful setting sheltered by the base of the Jordanelle Dam.

Also promised are multi-sensory experiences including large-scale art installations, food trucks, a vendor village, interactive fan experiences and the nightly Pond Yacht After party featuring an immersive nautical-themed stage nestled in the forest with surprise guest DJs each night. 

While camping options are still available, onsite cabins have already sold out with limited RV sites remaining.

The set will be DJ Snake’s first Utah performance, while G-Eazy is coming off a 2018 north American amphitheatre tour that reported $9.7 million grossed and 315,660 tickets sold. Empire of the Sun just announced a North American headline tour featuring multiple nights at many major theatres.

Counting Crows frontman and co-founder Barbara Rappaport’s Underwater Sunshine Festival returns, April 5-6 at New York City’s Bowery Electric, with the free-entry event featuring music from Petal, Maria Taylor, Roan Yellowthorn, Jordan Klassen, Eric Hutchinson, and Red Wanting Blue, along with a special performance by Cyndi Lauper. 

The event promises multiple stages, multiple genres, and an eclectic group of artists creating a journey of discovery for fans.

Of creating the festival, now in its second year, Duritz states: “It’s honestly my favorite time of year. I love when everyone shows up in New York and, for a week or so, I get to just drown in great music.”

Duritz also recently launched a podcast, Underwater Sunshine! – a series of conversations between noted non-journalist Duritz and his pal, author and music journalist James Campion, about life, music, and whatever else comes into their heads.

Duritz’s event continues the trend of artist-curated festivals in recent years, such as high-profile events from everyone from Post Malone to outlaw country artist Cody Jinks, but is notable for being a free-ticketed, artist-discovery-focused event.

Austin, Texas is the place to be for metal aficionados June 7-9, as the multi-venue Austin Terror Fest has announced a scary lineup with experimental metal including fuzzbass and drum combo Lightning Bolt, doom band Thou, and grind bands Pig Destroyer and Full Of Hell among the many. 

Each night of the festival, Austin Terror Fest will take over popular Austin venues in the Red River Cultural District to offer attendees performances from some of the most in-demand heavy metal and rock acts from across the globe, including several which have never performed in Texas before.

This year, the fest expands its music lineup to include genres such as noise rock and hip-hop, and has relocated to the Barracuda and Empire Control Room & Gar-age in 2019 in order to allow for much more space for attendees at the fest, as well as to make the festival more accessible with a more centralized location.

Other artists include New Orleans blackened death metal monsters Goatwhore, French blackened post-metal duo Alcest, Japanese doom band Church of Misery, and ston-er metal icons such as Chicago’s Bongripper, who will be playing in Texas for the first time ever.

Austin Terror Fest is the brainchild of David Rogers, who founded Northwest Terror Fest in Seattle, curated by Austin music scene veteran Dusty Brooks. 

The second annual Sol Blume festival at Cesar Chavez Plaza in Sacramento, Calif. takes place April 27, with a hip-hop, R&B and Latin-focused lineup including headliner Miguel, Jessie Reyes, Queen Najia, Summer Walker, J.I.D, Tierra Whack and many others.

It’s Miguel’s first Sacramento show in more than seven years.

Sol Blume is owned by Sacramento-area promoter and talent buyer Justin Nordan, who also works for Eventbrite, and Fornati Kumeh, who is also the owner of ENT Legends Concerts.
