AEG Sues Centerplate After Paying Injury Settlement

AEG is now suing a company that was selling food and merch at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena, after settling with a woman who got injured while working at an event.

Diann Brown was working at Kemper in 2008 and tripped over a metal strip, hitting her head and subsequently suing AEG and  the city, eventually settling for $45,000.

Now AEG is suing Volume Services Inc., which was reportedly doing business as Centerplate, to recoup its $45,000 settlement and nearly $36,000 in legal fees.

The entertainment giant is claiming that its contract with Centerplate made it liable for maintaining a safe working environment and that defendant should have taken responsibility for the third-party claim.

Centerplate has requested the suit be transferred to federal court, the Kansas City Business Journal wrote. 

Kemper is nearly approved for renovation and rebranding as the Mosaic Arena, although developers may need to wait until July 1 to get the $6 million in historic tax credits sought, as the city has already issued all of its available tax credits. Some state legislators are considering reducing, or even cancelling, historic tax credits.
