HMV Partners With UK Festivals
The festivals, which take place across the UK between June and September, will also gain some additional exposure through the deal. HMV was the go-to place for entertainment in the physical age. In 2009, it made an attempt to enter the live business by forming Mean Fiddler, a joint venture with Mama G.
The Mama deal marked the end of an acquisition spree that also included a book chain, a rival entertainment retailer and digital experts 7digital. However, HMV started selling assets again in 2011 due to increasing financial difficulties. Mama was sold in 2012 to pay off debt. Still the company was declared bankrupt in the beginning of 2013, which is when Hilco took over the HMV group. The partnership with said festivals is another step in reviving the iconic brand, which opened a digital download store in October 2013, called hmvdigital.
The digital music store “will help promote each festival’s line-ups and USPs through its website, newsletter, on-store banners, social media platforms and with competitions. hmvdigital will also provide festival goers with unique voucher codes to download a selection of tracks from artists playing at the festivals to complement their festival experience,” the announcement reads.
