Recording Academy And MusiCares Announce COVID-19 Relief Fund With $2 Million Donation

The fund was established with an initial donation of $1 million each from both the Recording Academy and MusiCares, totaling $2 million. Recording Academy Chapters will also be fundraising in their local communities. An announcement issued March 17 notes that the fund will be “be used to directly support those in the music community with the greatest need,” with the promise of additional updates to be made in the coming days. 

MusiCares chair Steve Boom noted that the organization couldn’t address the crisis on its own and invited the music community, “including labels, streaming services and anyone who is able to join us,” to join the relief efforts. 

 “The music industry is built on the work of musicians, artists, and music professionals,” Boom said. “It is in times like these, that the industry needs to come together to support those who are struggling, particularly those who rely on touring incomes to survive. We know this fund will need to be significant. … We’re all in when the good times roll, and it’s important that we’re all in when times are tough, too.”

Music industry professionals can make initial grant requests up to $1,000 to compensate for cancelled work and to help with basic living assistance (rent or mortgage) by filing an application that includes a proof of cancellation and bookings as well as a copy of a lease agreement or mortgage statement. MusiCares notes that if more funding is received, the organization will evaluate the grant amounts available.
