Nashville 'You Got Gold' Celebration Of John Prine Postponed To October 2022

“You Got Gold: Celebrating the Life & Songs of John Prine,” what was scheduled to be a weeklong celebration of the life of the late John Prine, has been postponed and will now take place October 7-12, 2022.

“Our sincerest wish was to gather safely this October to celebrate the life and music of our beloved John,” the Prine family said of its decision to postpone the event. “Given the ongoing situation with COVID-19 Delta variant, in Nashville and beyond, we’ve made the very difficult decision to postpone ‘You Got Gold’ until October 2022.

“You Got Gold: Celebrating the Life & Songs of John Prine” was to include tribute concerts at the Ryman Auditorium (Oct. 6-7), CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum (Oct. 8), and Basement East (Oct. 9). The celebration would have concluded on Prine’s 75th birthday.

“This decision to reschedule was not made lightly. We worked tirelessly to find a way to move forward in a safe and responsible manner, while also keeping in mind the intended joyful spirit of this long-awaited celebration and remembrance. This event is extraordinary in the sheer number of artists, crews, and fans that are planning to travel and gather together. In light of how John died, we just could not reconcile pushing forward and adding any undue stress and anxiety during an already fraught season.”

Additionally, Oh Boy Records — the independent label that Prine created and that celebrates its 40th anniversary this year — is tol release a new tribute record, Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, Vol. 2, on Oct. 8, including the first two installments: “Paradise” performed by Sturgill Simpson and “I Remember Everything” performed by Brandi Carlile.

“We stand in support of all of our friends and colleagues who continue to work on playing shows this fall and recognize we are all doing the very best we can to find safe pathways forward. Our deepest apologies to those disappointed in hearing this news. Our family wanted nothing more than to gather with you all and remember John together. We very much look forward to seeing you all next year when we can gather safely and joyfully, and truly be together as a big family and community to remember and celebrate the life and songs of one extraordinary man.”

Net proceeds from ‘You Got Gold’ were intended to benefit the Prine family’s newly created 501c3, The Hello In There Foundation, and selected grant recipients were Nashville-based non-profits Room In The Inn and Thistle Farms.

The Hello In There Foundation will move ahead to make gifts to both organizations and “looks forward to completing its full charitable commitments next year.”

The Prine family foundation will announce additional fundraising efforts this fall in response to critical needs in the aftermath of nationwide natural disasters and Afghan refugee resettlement programs, according to a statement.

Prine died April 20, 2020 of COVID in Nashville. He was a four-time Grammy-winner, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, a seven-time Americana Music Award-winner, a PEN New England Lyrics Award recipient and member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Since his debut in 1971, Prine released 18 albums, including his final masterpiece, 2018’s Tree Of Forgiveness, and has had his songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Young, Norah Jones, George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown Band and many others.
