The End For Anthology

Anthology, a 272-seat concert venue and supper club in San Diego intended as a downtown music showcase, has permanently closed – weeks after one of its co-owners told staff and media it would merely shutter temporarily.

No reason was given for the abrupt close, but according to San Diego’s Union-Tribune, co-owner Howard Berkson pink-slipped management staff Jan. 4 and “told them he and his wife, Anthology co-owner Marsha Berkson, were divorcing.”

Anthology opened in 2007 and presented national jazz, rock and pop tours including those by Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea and Aaron Neville.

Now-former Anthology music operations director Michael Pritchard told the paper he was not surprised, as he had been told not to book any more shows for the venue after the end of December.

“I was directed by ownership that they had determined Anthology should be closed as of Dec. 31,” Pritchard told the Union-Tribune. “Howard said he could not continue, that Anthology had come to the end of the road and he was not interested in doing it anymore.”

Pritchard was let go Dec. 30 but quickly landed on his feet with a new gig. He is reportedly the new artistic director for Yoshi’s, the Oakland, Calif., landmark jazz supper club and concert venue that served as the inspiration for Anthology.
