Underage Artists Rights Revised
South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission announced revisions June 17 to standard clauses in entertainment contracts.
Responding to public criticism that underage pop artists are often compelled to carry out “suggestive choreography” by their management companies, the FTC has said the companies must guarantee “protection of basic rights” for teenage singers and dancers.
These rights includes the protection of the artists’ “physical and psychological health, their right to education, personal rights, right to sleep and rest, and right to freedom of choice.”
The FTC has also prohibited entertainment agencies from asking underage artists to dress in revealing clothing and dance provocatively for “the purpose of attracting attention.”
Lastly, agencies cannot force their artists to work an excessive number of hours.
