ADA-Friendly Arena

The American Disabilities Act requires venues to offer seating to accommodate disabled patrons, but an under-construction arena in Indiana is going above and beyond the minimum obligations.

The downtown Evansville Arena will apparently offer disabled patrons the opportunity to sit in nearly every section of the house.

Venue architect Populous designed the building so that the clubhouse, suites, upper bowl and concourse levels of the arena will contain wheelchair-accessible seating, according to the Courier Press.

Some of that seating will be removable to make way for wheelchairs, and all will be built with sight lines in mind, Populous’ Chris Minter told the paper.

“Even if the person is standing up, you can see over his head,” he explained.

The entrance and lobby of the venue are expected to be at the same level and free of most barriers.

Other features at the arena include family toilets, headsets in some seats for the hearing impaired and a high-resolution scoreboard.
