Coldplay Bows On LIVE75 With European Shows
Multiple shows at stadiums on the European leg of Coldplay’s ongoing world tour place the band back on LIVE75 for the first time since the July 4 issue when they topped the chart at No. 1. This week they return as the “Hot Shot” headliner and land in the second position behind Ed Sheeran who retains his hold on No. 1 for a second week.
Coldplay’s sold-ticket average of 66,429 comes from a total of 11 concerts at four stadiums in three countries. Three of the venues hosted the group for multiple performances beginning with Frankfurt, Germany’s Deutsche Bank Park (formerly Commerzbank Arena), the first stadium on the tour schedule in July. The group played there three nights, July 2-5, and sold 138,282 tickets for a gross of $13.7 million. A single performance in Warsaw, Poland, at PGE Narodowy followed on July 8 with 57,574 tickets and a $4.6 million take.
Then, Berlin’s Olympiastadion welcomed the “Music of the Spheres” tour for three shows, July 10-13, with 216,535 fans in attendance and $20.4 million in revenue. A four-night run in Paris followed, adding 318,331 tickets from Stade de France to the overall 11-show ticket count that reached 730,722. The combined gross totaled $66.7 million, an average of more than $6 million per concert.
Yet, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ $6.37 million gross average surpasses both Coldplay and Sheeran (who also had a gross average in the $6 million range) to score “Heavy Hitter” status on LIVE75 based on concerts in London that topped $15 million and Dublin with almost $4 million in ticket revenue. Combined, over 180,000 seats were sold in both markets for a ticket average of 60,033 to score the third ranking on the chart.
With the five-week European leg of the band’s global stadium tour now in the books, they are currently on the road playing North American venues through September. Headlining stints are set this fall at the Louder Than Life Festival and Austin City Limits Music Festival, then the group will head to New Zealand and Australia for dates early next year.
Along with Sheeran’s top-place showing on LIVE75, he also remains at No. 1 on the Artist Power Index for the fourth consecutive week after scoring within the top five in Live, Streaming and Airplay. His Live rank is the second highest on the chart, behind Coldplay, based on recent multiple-night engagements at stadiums in Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and Copenhagen on his “Mathematics” world tour’s five-month trek through Europe.
Two performers make their first appearance on the Artist Power Index this week on the strength of recent concerts at The O2 in London. Rapper Travis Scott (No. 24) played two nights at the arena, Aug. 6-7, marking his first live shows since last November’s Astroworld Festival. The London shows were just the first two the Houston native has planned for the year. He is also booked for concerts in São Paulo, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Santiago, Chile; in November.
Pop star Christina Aguilera also charts on APX for the first time, landing at No. 38 with her three recent U.K. performances during the first week of August. Along with a show at The O2, she also played the Open Air Theatre at Scarborough, England, and Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena. She last appeared on the Pollstar charts with eight performances of her “The Xperience” residency at the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Three shows at the end of 2019 and five more through March 7, 2020 yielded a sold-ticket tally of 22,931 with gross sales topping $2.5 million.
