Chart Scene: Juneteenth Concert Lands Kendrick Lamar On Artist Power Index
Kendrick Lamar makes his first 2024 appearance on the Artist Power Index following his concert on the national Juneteenth holiday at Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. The June 19 event, dubbed “The Pop Out – Ken & Friends,” included appearances by a host of hip-hop stars throughout the evening including Dr. Dre, who joined the headliner during his set. DJ Hed and Mustard headed up opening sets that each featured multiple artists on stage. Ty Dolla $ign, YG, Tyler, the Creator and Blxst were just a few of the rappers from the Los Angeles area who appeared during the event. The single performance earns Lamar a ranking in the Top 25 on the chart.
Earlier this year, he was the opening night headliner at the “Axe Ceremonia Festival” at Parque Bicentenario in Mexico City. With a full slate of artists on both March 23 and 24, the event, promoted by OCESA and La Agencia de los Socios, drew 57,917 attendees and grossed more than $7.9 million.
Fueza Regida, another headliner at the Mexico City festival, also makes a debut appearance on the Artist Power Index at No. 45 based on a string of arena performances at U.S. cities on the band’s “Pero No Te Enamores” tour. The tour began in Austin, Texas, at the Moody Center on June 6 and is booked at arenas in U.S. and Mexican cities until Dec. 8. The final performance on the trek is planned for Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Lady Gaga also debuts on APX following her return to Las Vegas for another series of concerts with her “Jazz & Piano” residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The pop superstar kicked off a run of eight shows on June 19, the first of which falls in the current chart’s period of eligibility. Based on just the opening night performance alone, she scores the 42nd position on the chart.
The fourth debut on the Artist Power Index belongs to 26-year-old pop singer Chappell Roan (No. 50), based on 15 performances during her ongoing “Midwest Princess Tour,” booked in North America and Europe through mid-October. Box office reports from two of the recent concerts show a sellout crowd of 2,431 attended her concert at The Sylvee in Madison, Wisconsin, May 29, while 1,529 fans packed the State Theatre in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on June 1.
On LIVE75, the highest-ranked headliner among the 20 making their debuts on the chart is operatic pop trio Il Volo. The group performed four concerts at Verona Arena in Verona, Italy, averaging 9,411 sold tickets per show to land at No. 18. The overall sold-ticket count for the May 9-13 shows reached 37,646 with a combined gross totaling $2.5 million. The trio is set to begin a run of concerts in Italian cities from the end of June through early September, followed by more dates in other European countries through Nov. 6.
Topping the ranking on LIVE75 is Luke Combs, who makes his fifth appearance at No. 1 this year based on ticket sales from his “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour.” He averaged 49,590 sold seats per show based on back-to-back performances at three stadiums that hosted the tour during the chart’s eligibility timeframe. The first was San Antonio’s Alamodome with concerts on May 10 and 11, followed the next weekend by Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, with two concerts. At the end of May, he headed to the Phoenix area for two shows at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
As of the first of June, Combs has grossed over $85.6 million on his current tour and sold a total of 647,035 tickets at 13 concerts. His best gross for one show was $9.23 million at Beaver Stadium on the campus of Penn State University on April 27. With 73,339 tickets sold at the venue, it was also his best-attended single performance. Of the six stadiums that have hosted two shows, Levi’s Stadium is the top grosser with a $14.07 million box-office haul from 100,670 sold tickets on May 17 and 18.
