Jimmy Herring Cracks ‘The Invisible Whip’
In between dates with Widespread Panic, Jimmy Herring will be doing his own thing this summer with the debut of his new band, The Invisible Whip.
Herring has built up quite the resume over the years, including being a founding member of
An announcement explains that The Invisible Whip is named for “the intangible musical force that fuels” the longtime friends and musical collaborators that make up the band. The moniker is also “a nod to their time spend playing with Col. Bruce Hampton,” who passed away May 1 after collapsing on stage during his 70th birthday concert.
The lineup for The Invisible Whip includes Herring, Drummer Jeff Sipe, Matt Slocum on B3 organ and clavinet, bassist Kevin Scott, and multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby on Fender Rhodes, piano and violin.
The setlist for the tour will feature new music from Herring and selections from his previous two solo albums, 2008’s Lifeboat and 2012’s Subject to Change Without Notice.
The routing begins July 19 at Memphis’ Minglewood Hall. The Invisible Whip joins John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension on tour starting Nov. 1 in Buffalo, N.Y.
