Asbury Lanes recently announced it was undergoing renovations and entering an exclusive deal to be booked by The Bowery Presents. The venue originally opened in the 1960s as an 18-lane bowling alley and was turned into a 350-capacity alternative music venue in the early 2000s, seeing performances from the likes of Of Montreal, The Bouncing Souls, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, and Mick Jones of The Clash.
Asbury Lanes faced closure or demolition because of structural and mechanical problems following a half century of use. That was until developer iStar decided to revamp the venue as part of it’s revitalization of the Asbury Park waterfront.
Upgrades include a custom-designed sound system by Clair Brothers, new lighting by Nashville-based Cour Design and a reinvented stage where platforms will cover the bowling lanes during performances, doubling the venue’s capacity to 746.
“Asbury Lanes has played a key role in the rich and storied music history of Asbury Park,” Mark Shulman, principal at The Bowery Presents, said in a statement. “When paired with the noteworthy bookings that The Bowery Presents is known for, the reborn Asbury Lanes will become the premier intimate venue for the entire region.”
