The Call’s Michael Been Passes
Been’s son is Robert Been, singer and bassist for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The elder Been was working for the band as its sound engineer when he died after suffering a heart attack backstage at BRMC’s gig at Belgium’s Pukkelpop Festival.
Been played a major role in BRMC’s development and was often referred to as the band’s fourth member. Acting as mentor and guide, Been helped the band capture its sound in the studio and worked as co-producer and engineer on many Black Rebel Motorcycle Albums.
As guitarist / vocalist of The Call, Been sang on the band’s several chart toppers, including “The Walls Came Down,” “I Still Believe (Great Design)” and “Let The Day Begin.”
The Call was also a favorite among music artists, including Bono, Peter Gabriel and Robbie Robertson, all of whom contributed to the band’s albums. Gabriel once referred to the band as “the future of American music.”
